Volunteers encouraged to sign up for "Mayor Broome's Clean Sweep EBR" set for April 1, 2017

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome in partnership with Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful and in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup is hosting the inaugural "Mayor Broome's Clean Sweep EBR" parishwide cleanup on Saturday, April 1.

Residents are asked to join the Mayor along with community groups and businesses to help pick up litter at various sites throughout the community.  The event will start at 8:30 a.m. for registration and 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the cleanup, which will take place in targeted areas in each of the 12 Metro Council districts throughout the City Parish.

"I'm so excited about this event because we are bringing together a host of community groups and businesses so we can all make our City Parish better," Mayor Broome said.  "A clean city is not only great for our residents, but it also affects tourism, economic development, and it even affects crime.  We need everyone working together to make our community a place we are all proud to call home."

The Mayor is partnering with Visit Baton Rouge, Waste Management, Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Downtown Business Association, Baton Rouge Lodging Association, East Baton Rouge Parish Library, Baton Rouge 200, and the Downtown Development District.

Volunteers are asked to wear a red T-shirt in honor of Baton Rouge 200 bicentennial celebration.  You can sign up as an individual or form a team.  All cleaning supplies and water will be provided, thanks to the generous sponsorships provided by ExxonMobil, Formosa Plastics, and Keep America Beautiful.

Litter costs Louisiana taxpayers an estimated $40 million yearly for disposal, enforcement of litter laws, and anti-litter education programs, according to Keep Louisiana Beautiful.  Litter is also harmful to the environment and wildlife.
